The test featured the space vehicle going down a 15-foot zip line that was attached to the top of a basketball rim. The pod would be attached to a spacecraft. In the class, youngsters had to sketch a design of their pod that would house Astronaut Eggbert (a raw egg). He noted that virtually no child working alone has had a successful Eggbert landing. "Girls' minds and boys' minds work differently, so if you have more ideas you can come up with better ways of doing things," he said. In group projects teams are mixed with boys and girls and a leader is designated, Gaines said. The summer camp kept children engaged with science during the summer break from school, said DeOndre Gains, Starbase Oklahoma lead instructor. The curriculum is geared primarily toward fifth graders. Its educators provide lessons in subjects such as math, physics, chemistry and geology to supplement school lessons, and youth organizations programs. Starbase is a Department of Defense program to get the nation's youth excited about the sciences, she said. "I want them (children) to be interested in science and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) because a lot of times they look at that as being hard or boring," Lassien said, "but science can be fun and really rewarding, and we do that with hands-on experiments and exploration." The lesson's goal was to teach problem solving, team building, leadership, math and creative thinking skills, said Shayla Lassien, Starbase Oklahoma lead instructor. This was the scenario nine youths ranging in ages from 12 to 16 faced as a project during the Starbase Oklahoma summer camp July 13, at the Fort Sill Youth Center. Working in teams and with a limited budget, materials and time the children promptly get to work on solving the problem. Young engineers have to figure out a way to make his crash landing survivable.
